Mission Critical Gear Part 1.

There's a certain amount of raw, reckless abandon that comes with rock and roll. The beauty is in the imperfections, but it has to be the right imperfections. The right gear will help you keep the stuff that needs to be polished within range.

Today; we're talking about tuners.

You HAVE to be in tune. There's no way around it. You can play a wrong note because you're rocking out too hard and people will still love your energy. You play all the right notes out of tune and you're not getting any love from the audience.

The gold standard is the Boss tu-2.

I have had one of these babies on my pedal board for over a decade. It's easy to see, works well, and is basically bomb proof. At $70 on amazon, there's really no excuse. Just do it. Buy once, never have an audience member cringe at your guitar being out of tune. That simple.

Next on the list is the boss tu-3.

The tu-3 is basically a tu-2 with a segmented LED meter that has "high-brightness" mode. If you play outdoors a ton, might be worth it. Otherwise, save a couple bucks and go with the tu-2.

Honorable Mention:

I am not a huge fan of mini pedals. Likely cause of my size 13 shoe. However, this thing does the job VERY well and does it for less than $35. Not as bomb-proof as the time-tested boss stomp-box, I worry about dropping something on the screen and breaking it. . . but again for less than a cheap date to chipotle, you can replace it if it breaks.
