Locking tuners. Are they right for you?

Locking tuners are. all the rage right now. What do they actually do though? Really, they're only good for one thing: Faster and easier string changes. The locking mechanism holds the string so you don't have to worry about the luthier's knot, wrapping the string around the post multiple times, or whatever tradition you've been taught about. the"right" way to string as guitar.

There are a couple other fringe benefits, but in our opinion, they don't noticeably move the needle. Here's the whole list.

  1. Faster and Effortless String Changes: Say goodbye to tedious string winding with locking tuners. Unlike traditional tuners that require multiple wraps of string around the post, locking tuners feature a streamlined design that allows for quick and effortless string changes. Simply insert the string through the tuner, tighten the locking mechanism, and trim the excess. With locking tuners, you can spend less time restringing and more time playing your favorite riffs and solos.

  2. Extra mass on the headstock helps with sustain. There used to be a product called the fat finger that you'd clip on your headstock. The idea was more mass meant more inertia once the headstock started vibrating so it'd take longer to stop. So the extra mass from locking tuners would do the same thing. The effect is so minute that I don't know if I'd trust anyone who said that this is the main reason for installing locking tuners.

What locking tuners do not do is help in any noticeable way with tuning stability. This is a commonly cited myth. Typically it's confusion with a locking nut, which often is used with a tremolo system to help keep things in tune when using one of those contraptions.

In summary, locking tuners are a valuable addition to any electric guitar setup, offering benefits when changing strings. Whether you're shopping for guitars or seeking to upgrade your existing instrument, consider incorporating locking tuners into your setup.
